Recovery-focused practice at scale is still in its infancy, and the national and international evidence base for it reflects that. ImROC-affiliated researchers and consultants are making a major contribution to its development worldwide.
We work with a broad range of research partners to develop and support funded research on various aspects of Recovery. We are keen to support sites with their own local evaluation, we also invite sites to participate in research projects where appropriate. If you would like ImROC to contribute to your Recovery research project please get in touch.
Evaluation of Recovery-focused practice, demonstrating the difference that it makes to people’s experiences and outcomes, is essential if we are to transform services and communities into places that help people achieve their own goals and recover lives that they value. The measurement of Recovery outcomes is also increasingly regarded as mandatory by commissioners. We are uniquely placed to support sites both to develop Recovery-focused outcome measures and to evaluate Recovery-focused service initiatives. We are also able to provide expert evaluation of your progress to date and help you identify ways to accelerate your improvement work.
Support to identify Recovery-focused outcome measures
We can provide tailored support to mental health services seeking to develop a set of outcome measures that are specifically relevant to the support of Recovery in mental health (i.e. not symptom or general measures). We are aware of the importance of identifying measures that are brief, easy to understand and simple to complete, relevant, with high face validity, and able to combine an assessment of individual progress with the possibility of aggregating data to describe the performance of groups. We would also recommend the identification of measures aimed at:
- improving the experience (quality) of Recovery supporting care (PREMs)
- facilitating the achievement of personally relevant Recovery goals (PROMs)
- evaluating service costs for individuals before and after being engaged with these services.
Evaluation of Recovery-focused initiatives
We help sites to develop evaluation proposals/designs for specific Recovery-focused projects. Such routine service evaluations are often an integral aspect of innovative projects which can be helpful in securing further funding. We help identify methodologies, methods and measures, and we can also introduce you to other sites undertaking similar work.
Support with multi-site Recovery-focused research projects/programmes
The ImROC team of consultants brings world class practice-based research expertise, and includes globally renowned recovery leaders such as Dr Julie Repper and Dr Rachel Perkins. We facilitate their involvement in Recovery-focused research, bringing with them an international perspective on innovative, Recovery-focused service developments.
Masterclasses/workshops on Recovery-focused research
Learning together is one of the most valued aspects of working with us. Our wide-ranging network of mental health organisations and individuals enables us to link you easily with others who share your experience and ambition. We are able to bring together groups informally or formally, through masterclasses, workshops and learning sets which focus on research, evaluation and outcomes.
The ImROC team brings together a unique blend of talent and experience. We have diverse backgrounds in clinical practice, research, management and leadership, innovation and improvement, across the NHS, social care, education, prisons and the third sector. Many of us have lived experience of mental health problems. With this grounding in the realities of frontline service delivery, combined with our knowledge and development of best practice, we can offer you a comprehensive perspective on your service’s progress towards recovery orientation. This might help you as part of your ongoing improvement effort, or you may choose to use it in preparation for something specific, like a significant piece of change or an audit or inspection of your service. We have a strengths-based ethos in our work so this is always constructive, always inclusive and always about collaborative improvement.
